A policital party is a dumb concept

Right now, elections are being organized where I live. In about a month, we’ll have to cast our votes to someone who we think will best represent our local interests in the soon to be newly formed government. But as I’m thinking about all of this, I realized that there are some things that don’t work like they should. We say we live in a democratic country, but in fact, there’s almost nothing democratic about the way we run things out there. In fact, one thing that just hit me recently is how absurd the whole point of political parties is.

What is a political party? Basically, it’s a bunch of people, centered on some common ideas that they all adhere to. It’s a bunch of people who all agree they’re the only ones who hold the right solutions to put the nation back on track (because the nation is always off-track when they’re not in power, isn’t it?). So in other words, these are people that, while at heart want the good of the community, think that only them knows what “good” really means. They all adhere to a preconceived idea of what the population really wants.

The main problem with this is that it creates a situation where representatives do not represent the population who voted for them in the government, but end up the other way around. They instead represent the government and the decision takers among the population. That is the complete opposite of what a democracy should be. Those people seem to think that when they get elected, it means the whole population is agreeing on the party’s ideas. I can state a recent example where our current prime minister said that when the population put them at the helm, it sent a “clear message” that we authorized them to do anything they want. Personally, I fail to see how a simple checkmark on a piece of paper is an agreement on every future bills, laws and decisions the government will take in the future. This is just nonsense. It’s like finding a blank check somewhere and then considering it as a legal permission from the issuer to steal as much money as you can from his bank account.

Because unless we’re all a bunch of psychics that can see into the future (and I don’t think we are), our votes are only about electing a local candidate to represent us, and not a permission sent to elected officials to spend our money the way they see fit, nor is it public backing of all future proposed bills. Apparently, there’s some sort of a memory disease that seems to attack people when they get elected. They all seem to forget that they’re supposed to represent the population, not lead it.

Did the government asked me (or anyone for that matter) about whether or not I wanted such bill to be passed? No. No one was asked. Not even our elected representative, because he’s tied down to the party’s official stance, and thus automatically agree on anything the party will propose. So the government took our votes as a collective permission to do that, like we all said to him that we all agree with whatever they’re trying to pass. So I’m sorry to say, but this way of doing things is plain bullshit. It is not only an attack on intellectual honesty and integrity, it is also highly immoral and disrespectful of the population.

So what I’m getting to, is that the whole concept of political parties makes our “democracy” looks like a joke. It makes the whole voting process like offering a slave the “chance” to choose who will exploit him. It is no more about individuals electing people to represent them, thus it is no more about democracy. It is more like “choose your next master, peon. Choose who will rule over you and your fellow countrymen for the next 4 years”. And those same people have even the guts to say that if we’re not happy about them and their non-democratic decisions, we could vote for someone else next time. Right. Like THAT will change anything. Choosing another “master” will not solve the problem, because that’s exactly the whole issue! We don’t want another “master”. We want a manager who will deal with issues in accordance with the will of the population. We want a manager who will ask every locally elected representative to voice the opinion of the local population. We want to be the masters of our own game. No more peons in someone else’s game.

Because what we have right now are only different masters to choose from, all of which will end up doing whatever they want in the end, as if people’s votes are a permission to do so. Every political party in power since the dawn of times had done this, and every political party that will exist until the end of times will continue to do this. The very concept of a political party is going completely against democratic values, and thus renders our claim of living into a democratic country a big fat joke.

To regain true democracy, the idea of political parties should be abolished. Until then, all we’ll do will be choosing our new masters. We should stop trying to look at both sides of the fence to choose our side. We shouldn’t choose a side. We should destroy the fence.

No more political parties.

People.

We need people. Not parties.
