The wonderful world of beliefs

While discussing in a forum about Jack Thompson’s stupid statement about the PC game “The Sims 2” being a pedophile paradise, one of my friends said something that made me think. If all these new lawsuits over content that wasn’t released to the public in entertainment products, is any indications of things to come, we better watch out for religious groups who could launch an “all-out assault” on all form of entertainment (especially videogames) soon. I won’t go into the details here, just follow the previous link to read what it’s all about.

Anyway, so that made me think about how I’m really tired of all these religious fanatics’ hatred toward anything that doesn’t fit into their belief system. It seems that something those people can’t understand, is that all of their beliefs are exactly that. Beliefs. As in “things we can’t prove”. As in “things we can’t be sure about”. And no matter how they put it, they can’t prove anything about them. That’s exactly why they’re called “beliefs”.

You know, I can’t “believe” that 2+2=4. It’s a fact, and we can’t believe in a fact. We know a fact. It’s a fact because I can demonstrate, and explain it. I can do experiments that will prove it to anyone who’ll argue with me over it. A fact is the exact opposite of a belief. It’s something that we all have no choice of agreeing upon. And that’s, again, the exact opposite of a belief, and of religion.

The problem I have with religion is not religion itself. It’s humans making their own interpretations of what their religion should be. The essential message of all religions out there is one about peace and about love, yet people are still intolerant, and are still discriminating, and even killing in its name. Most people say that God “loves his children”, yet, he warrants people to insult, segregate and kill? What part of “You shall not kill” don’t they understand? Has God made exceptions rules in there I’m not aware of? I seriously believe that people who think God might send an homosexual in hell for having LOVED someone, are going against what God might probably have wanted in the first place, that is, respect, love, and peace amongst all humans.

In fact, I’ll admit I have kind of a weird hope that God, someday, will come down here and say to all religions on earth that they got it all wrong, that he overestimated the intelligence of the human race and thought we were intelligent enough to understand what it’s all about, really. That he don’t give a damn about sexual orientation, about women in the clergy, and stem cell research. And more importantly, that he will punish those who have committed atrocities in its name.
